velocity code of conduct
students, Parents, Athletes & visitors
While at Velocity:
-
Be on time for classes and training. always try to arrive 5min early to allow time to check in.
-
Make sure to be polite and greet any instructors and staff you see.
-
Our instructors sanitize equipment and the mats between classes so remain off the mats until your class starts.
-
Always wear shoes anytime you are not on the mats especially when going outside or to the restroom.
-
Students ranked green belt and above begin leadership training. This includes helping new students, teaching to tie belts, leading stretching and teaching basic form patterns.
-
The 1st ten minutes of class are often self study time to allow instructors to address individual student needs. Students should check in and begin practicing on their own. If a student needs help during this time they should ask any student green belt or above. This time is an important part of class and students should be on time.
-
Healthy snacks and water are always welcome in the gym.
-
Do not talk to students while they are in the mats. Parent coaching from the sideline is always detrimental to student focus and development.
-
Velocity classes have separate curriculum based on age and parts of our program involve full contact. Students are only allowed in age appropriate class times.
-
Bring a full bottle of water to every class. Juice, dairy and energy drinks are not allowed during class time.
-
Cleanliness is Required, students are required to have clean hands and feet to practice. A clean wrinkle free uniform is also required for every class. Taekwondo is a contact sport and proper hygiene helps keep the gym safe and enjoyable for everyone.
-
Keep Velocity a positive place, if you have any questions or concerns talk to staff. Gossip, bullying, talking down and comparing students/athletes is never allowed.
-
Be Respectful, Taekwondo is both a sport and traditional art. Students will address instructors by “Ma’am”, “Sir”, or “Instructor”. Bowing to instructors, training partners, and coaches is proper etiquette for showing mutual respect and sportsmanship.
Outside of Velocity:
-
Please let us know if you will be missing multiple classes.
-
Never misuse Taekwondo. The best self defense is always to escape the situation. Velocity students or athletes fighting outside of Velocity may be suspended or asked to leave.
-
Know the schedule and arrive ontime. Students that arrive after warm ups are complete may not be able to join class, or will need to complete a private warm up before joining.
-
Keep your personal equipment in good condition. We do a lot of full contact sparring at Velocity. Sparring gear should be kept clean, in good condition and replaced when needed. If it smells its not clean and may need to be replaced.
-
Keep Velocity a positive place, if you have any questions or concerns talk to staff. Gossip, bullying, talking down and comparing students/athletes is never allowed.
Competition Team Support/Parents
-
Trust the Process: Follow facility guidelines and coaches instructions. Velocity is a place of learning, not a democracy.
-
Support, Don't Instruct: Be positive and encouraging from the sidelines but never give corrections or teach techniques yourself. Parent coaching hurts athlete development and will not be tolerated.
-
Model Winning Behavior: Children & teens learn by example; show respect to instructors, officials, and opponents, and avoid public criticism. If you have questions please talk to the front desk staff to arrange a time to talk about it with coaches.
-
Focus on Effort & Character: Emphasize teamwork, self-discipline, and perseverance over just winning or losing. Becoming a champion involves loses, set backs, mistakes, heartbreak and most importantly not giving up because of those things.
-
Handle Disappointment Appropriately: Address concerns with instructors privately and respectfully, not publicly or through gossip. If you have any questions please talk to the front desk staff to get them addressed with coaches.
-
Don’t Compare: Comparison has no place at Velocity, we celebrate each other without jealousy. Being part of a teammates success especially durning moments of personal set back is the core of indomitable spirit and something we should all strive for.
-
Safety First: To prevent repetitive movement injuries in young athletes Velocity suggests 1hr of training per year of age, each week for athletes under 11 years old. That means a 10yr old athlete should aim for 10hrs of taekwondo training per week on average. Athletes should report injuries promptly to coaches. Follow coaches instruction about rest days and recovery.
Velocity’s history of helping athletes reach national and international success is well documented and we are committed to continuing to build on our programs success our way. We are excited to help your athlete on their taekwondo competition journey.
